Binance vs Coinbase: Fees, Availability, and Safety
Binance vs Coinbase compared: who can use each, fees, custody, what you can trade, and how Binance.US differs, with sources checked October 2026.

In 2019, Binance said it would stop serving US users on Binance.com and pointed them to Binance.US, a separate platform, according to the US Department of Justice. Check which platform serves your location before you sign up. Outside the US, Binance and Coinbase both operate, and the choice comes down to fees, coin selection, and the products you want.
This Binance vs Coinbase guide compares Binance, Binance.US, and Coinbase on who can use each one, what trading costs, what you can trade, and how custody works. Sources checked 30 October 2026.
Disclosure: This comparison is published by Nika, a non-custodial trading app. We are not affiliated with Binance or Coinbase. Every product and fee claim below links to the company’s own pages, its SEC filings, or a regulator, checked on 30 October 2026. Fees and availability change, so confirm on the provider’s site before you open an account.
Binance vs Coinbase: the short answer
- If you live in the US: compare Binance.US and Coinbase. Binance.US is run by a separate US company, BAM Trading Services, and serves 40 US states and territories. Coinbase serves US residents age 18 and older, and it also offers stocks, futures, and prediction markets to eligible users.
- If you live outside the US: Binance and Coinbase both serve users outside the US, but availability depends on where you live. Check each provider for your country.
- If you mainly want low trading fees: on the order book, Binance.US lists 0% maker and 0.02% taker on most pairs, and Binance’s entry spot rate is 0.100% for both makers and takers. Coinbase charges fees plus a spread on simple trades and shows the final price before you confirm. The fees section below compares them in detail.
Binance vs Coinbase at a glance
Binance vs Coinbase comparison (sources checked 30 October 2026). The table splits Binance into its global exchange and Binance.US, because they are run by different companies with different rules. Each cell comes from the provider’s own pages, an SEC filing, or a regulator. “Check with the provider” means we could not confirm the value on a primary source on the date checked.

Binance, Binance.US, and Coinbase: who can use each
Binance (global)
According to the Department of Justice’s November 2023 release, Binance Holdings operated the main Binance exchange at binance.com. According to the Department of Justice, Binance announced in 2019 that it would block US customers and launched a separate US exchange, Binance.US (DOJ).
Binance’s licenses page lists entities in Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM) regulated by the Financial Services Regulatory Authority (FSRA): Nest Exchange Limited, Nest Clearing and Custody Limited, and Nest Trading Limited (Binance licenses). Which services you can use depends on your country, so check Binance’s terms and the sign-up flow for where you live.
Binance.US
Binance.US is operated by BAM Trading Services, a separate US company. It is registered with FinCEN as a money services business, holds NMLS ID 1906829, and has money transmitter licenses in 32 states (Binance.US licenses). It serves 40 US states and territories, a wider footprint than its licenses because not every state requires one (Binance.US).
As of 3 June 2026, Binance.US was not available in Alaska, American Samoa, Connecticut, Georgia, Guam, Maine, Northern Mariana Islands, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, Texas, U.S. Virgin Islands, Vermont, and Washington. In Kansas and Wisconsin, it offers crypto-only services, without USD services (Binance.US states). If you live in New York or North Carolina, check with Binance.US before you sign up.
Coinbase
Coinbase’s US User Agreement requires you to be at least 18 years old and to reside in the United States, and it says some features may or may not be available depending on your location (Coinbase User Agreement). Coinbase holds money transmitter licenses under NMLS ID 1163082, and Coinbase Custody Trust Company is chartered by the New York Department of Financial Services (Coinbase licenses). Stock trading is for US residents only (Coinbase stocks).
Fees: Binance vs Coinbase
Order-book trading fees
Binance.US charges 0% maker and 0.02% taker on all pairs except its Tier 0 pair, BNB/USD, which is 0% maker and 0.01% taker. The 0.02% taker rate drops to 0.01% once your 30-day volume reaches $500 million or more, and paying fees in BNB gives a discount (Binance.US fees).
On Binance’s global exchange, the Regular User (VIP 0) spot rate is 0.100% maker and 0.100% taker, or 0.075% each when you pay with BNB at 25% off (Binance fees).
Coinbase charges volume-based transaction fees, and its annual report says Simple trading fees are generally higher than those on Advanced trading (Coinbase 10-K). Coinbase shows Advanced rates only after you sign in, so check your tier in the app.
Simple buy, sell, and convert
Binance.US prices simple buy, sell, and convert orders with a spread built into the price, shown on the Preview Purchase screen before you approve (Binance.US fees). For Binance’s global exchange, we could not confirm simple buy and convert pricing, so check with the provider.
Coinbase includes a spread in the quoted price on simple buy and sell orders, and it may add a Coinbase fee that varies by payment method; check with the provider for the fee on your payment method (Coinbase Help, checked 30 October 2026). Coinbase shows the final price, including fees, when you authorize the trade (Coinbase User Agreement).
The user agreement also includes a disclosure for California residents: the Coinbase Fee will not exceed $10 on transactions under $200, or 6% on other transactions. That is a cap in a state disclosure, not a quote for your trade.
Deposit and withdrawal fees
Binance.US says ACH deposits and withdrawals are free. Wire deposits are $0 (your bank may charge), wire withdrawals cost $25, and debit or credit card deposits cost 3.99% (Binance.US fees). Coinbase supports ACH and wire for USD and lets you buy with a bank account, debit or credit card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, or PayPal; check the fee for your method in the app. For Binance’s global exchange, funding options depend on your country.
Whichever exchange you pick, compare the amount you receive on the same trade size, not the headline rate.
What you can trade
Crypto
Binance.US offers 200+ cryptocurrencies and staking on 25+ assets (Binance.US). Binance.US deducts a standard service fee of 9.95% to 39.95% from staking rewards, and 90% in its Soft-Stake program, in exchange for customer benefits (Binance.US fees).
Coinbase offers crypto and, since December 2025, stocks, commodity futures, perpetual futures, and prediction markets (Coinbase 10-K). Its ETH staking page showed “up to 1.65% APY” on 30 October 2026, and Coinbase One adds a staking boost. Coinbase’s help center says residents of California, Maryland, New Jersey, and Wisconsin cannot stake new principal (Coinbase Help).
Binance’s global coin count and staking terms were not confirmed on the pages we read.
Derivatives
Coinbase launched US perpetual-style futures, acquired the derivatives exchange Deribit in August 2025, and offers perpetual futures to eligible non-US customers through Coinbase International Exchange. Binance’s fee page lists USDⓈ-M futures, COIN-M futures, and options, but availability depends on your country. Derivatives on Binance.US were not confirmed on the pages we read, so check with the provider. For background, see how perpetuals differ from dated futures, and if you want perps from a self-custody wallet instead, read what a perp DEX is.
Stocks and prediction markets
Coinbase Capital Markets, an SEC-registered broker-dealer and FINRA member, began US stock trading in December 2025 with $0 commissions on self-directed trades; other fees may apply (Coinbase stocks). Coinbase Financial Markets, a registered futures commission merchant, began offering event contracts the same month. Coinbase says access to prediction markets is “initially limited to a subset of U.S. users” (Coinbase prediction markets). For how prediction market venues differ, see our prediction markets compared guide.
Custody and safety
Both are custodial
All three exchanges hold your crypto for you. Coinbase’s US User Agreement describes a hosted wallet and says Coinbase stores private keys in a combination of online and offline storage. It also says customer assets are held for you, are not Coinbase’s property, and are not subject to claims of Coinbase’s creditors (Coinbase User Agreement).
Binance.US says it holds user assets 1:1 in full reserve and keeps most crypto in offline, US-based cold storage. It reports SOC 2 Type I and Type II audits and ISO/IEC 27001:2022 and 27701:2019 certifications (Binance.US). Binance’s terms of use, effective 27 October 2026, say that by opening an account “you appoint NCCL as custodian of all your Digital Assets” (Binance terms of use).
For what custodial means in practice, see whether Coinbase is non-custodial.
The other model is self-custody, where you hold the keys. In the Nika app, for example, wallets are created at sign-up with email, Google, or Apple. Nika uses Privy as the wallet infrastructure provider, and Nika does not hold users’ private keys. Self-custody has its own risks, including lost logins, phishing, and smart contract risk, so read what a non-custodial wallet is before you switch.
Regulatory record
These are the dates and outcomes from the official records. As exchanges grow, this record matters more, since an exchange starts to look like a bank.
- Binance, November 2023: Binance pleaded guilty to violations of the Bank Secrecy Act, failure to register as a money transmitting business, and the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. It agreed to pay over $4 billion and to retain an independent compliance monitor for three years (DOJ).
- Binance and Binance.US, May 2025: the SEC case filed on 5 June 2023 against Binance Holdings, BAM Trading Services, BAM Management US Holdings, and Changpeng Zhao ended on 29 May 2025, when the SEC filed a joint stipulation to dismiss it with prejudice (SEC).
- Coinbase, February 2025: the SEC filed a joint stipulation with Coinbase to dismiss its civil enforcement action on 27 February 2025 (SEC).
Security incidents
In a Form 8-K filed on 15 May 2025, Coinbase said a threat actor obtained customer data by paying contractors or employees in support roles outside the United States. Coinbase said no passwords or private keys were compromised and the personnel could not access customer funds. It did not pay the threat actor’s demand, and it said it intends to voluntarily reimburse eligible retail customers who sent funds to the threat actor as a direct result of the incident, after it confirms the facts (Coinbase 8-K).
Binance vs Coinbase: which should you choose?
| Your situation | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| US, low order-book fees | Binance.US | 0% maker, 0.02% taker |
| US, crypto plus stocks | Coinbase | Stocks, futures, events |
| US resident in Texas | Coinbase | Binance.US not in Texas |
| Outside the US | Compare both | Depends on your country |
Binance.US fits only if you live in a US state it supports. Coinbase fits if you want crypto plus stocks, futures, or prediction markets in one account. Outside the US, availability and products depend on your country.
When you weigh Coinbase vs Binance, the deciding factors are where you live, the order type you use, and which products you need. If you buy with simple orders, compare the final price on the same amount at each exchange. For a wider view, see our trading app comparison or Kraken vs Coinbase.
If you would rather keep your own keys, there is a third option.
Another option: a self-custodial app
The Nika app is not an exchange account. It is a non-custodial app where you hold the keys, and Nika does not hold users’ private keys. With the Nika app, trades settle in USDC from your existing balance. Gas fees are covered automatically in the Nika app. You can trade perpetual futures with leverage up to 50x, depending on the market, with isolated or cross margin, depending on the market. The Nika app shows an estimated liquidation price before you confirm a perp trade. Earning yield is live too: you can earn yield on your balance through third-party protocols, and yields are not guaranteed.
The Nika app does not replace a fiat bank transfer or a broker-dealer stock account. For other self-custody venues, see our guide to DeFi trading platforms.
Asset and feature availability depends on your jurisdiction and the applicable issuer or protocol terms.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use Binance in the US?
According to the Department of Justice, Binance announced in 2019 that it would block US customers and launched Binance.US. Binance.US lists 40 supported US states and territories, not including Texas. If you live in New York or North Carolina, check your state with Binance.US.

Which is cheaper, Binance.US or Coinbase?
On the order book, Binance.US lists 0% maker and 0.02% taker on most pairs. Coinbase uses volume-based fees and adds a spread on simple buys, and it shows the final price before you confirm, so compare the same trade on both.
Is Coinbase safer than Binance?
Both are custodial, so you rely on each company’s security and policies. Binance pleaded guilty to US charges in 2023, the SEC dismissed its cases against Binance and Coinbase in 2025, and Coinbase disclosed a customer data incident in May 2025 with no keys or funds accessed.
Can I trade stocks or futures on Binance.US or Coinbase?
Coinbase offers US stocks through Coinbase Capital Markets and futures through Coinbase Financial Markets for eligible users. For Binance.US, check with the provider.
Is there an option where I hold my own keys?
Yes, a non-custodial app such as the Nika app, where wallets are created at sign-up and Nika does not hold users’ private keys. You take on responsibility for your login and approvals.
